A group of Sylacauga citizens decided in 1988 that the school children of Sylacauga were entitled to the same educational opportunities as those children who attended school in wealthier school districts. Thus, the group formed an IRS-approved charitable school foundation. The concept allows individuals, partnerships and corporations to make financial donations to the Foundation and then take a deduction on their income taxes. The Foundation's governing body, a Board of Directors composed of local citizens, invests the donations in interest-generating accounts. The interest generated by the investments is used to fund grants to educational programs above the basic programs funded by the State and that directly benefit the school children of the Sylacauga City System.
Through sound financial management and the generous donations of the people of Sylacauga, the Foundation has awarded in excess of $1,000,000.00 in grants that have directly benefited the children of Sylacauga while maintaining over $1.2 million in sound investments.
